DAY 11: OUR LAST DAY AT LACOR HOSPITAL

We had a late wakeup today, Tuesday the 25th, though some of us, like Abigail Robson, had no idea and woke up at the unruly hour of 7. After having breakfast, we went to the hospital. We met with staff working in the records department and learned some of what they did. There was still a lot of physical paperwork in Lacor, and our job was to take paper patient discharge sheets and add them to online accounts. At first, all of us could agree it was decently stressful, having full control over official work. However, after a quick lesson and millions of questions on doctors’ poor handwriting, we got the hang of it.

After working for a couple of hours, we went for lunch. We also got a delivery of some hand-sewn clothes! Then we went to the hospital again, bringing a giant check that Franco printed. We signed it and brought it to the Hospital telling Dr. Emmanuel that all the generous donations given to us reached a total of 7,008 USD. They were so thankful that this money raised would be used to help people with malaria at Lacor.

After finishing and taking pictures with the mega-check, we separated; one group went to interview a pharmacist and other staff, and the other group (which I was in) went and finished up some data work. While the first time we completed simple paperwork on the maternity ward, this time we did the medical ward. While putting in the paperwork for this general ward, we learned many of the common issues that bring people to Lacor. Some of the main ones were hypertension, false labor, and malaria. After we finished, the staff were so grateful. We finished all the work they had, and I’m sure it was much better having seven other people helping to complete this task.

This was an awesome, very unique experience that gave us an opportunity to explore the jobs and assignments that allow hospitals to function. We were able to help the records department, and also had such a good time doing it!
